What is Carbon footprint and how is it calculated in Thailand?

A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) that are released into the atmosphere directly or indirectly by the activities of a person, company, city, or state. These emissions are measured in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO₂e).

Thailand Greenhouse Gas Organization (TGO) is the organization setting standards for the management of GHG emissions in Thailand.

Below are the two main approaches to calculating carbon footprint in Thailand.

Carbon Footprint of Organization (CFO)

An organization’s carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gasses emitted from various activities of an organization and is divided in three different scopes.

1

Scope 1: Direct Emissions

Emissions from sources you own, such as company vehicles, machinery, and on-site fuel usage.

2

Scope 2: Indirect Emissions From Purchased Energy

Emissions generated from the electricity, heating, or cooling you purchase and consume.

3

Scope 3: Other Indirect Emissions

Emissions from activities in your value chain, including business travel, supply chain operations, and product lifecycle impacts.

Carbon Footprint of Product (CFP)

The carbon footprint of a product is the total amount of greenhouse gasses emissions produced throughout a product’s life cycle. It is calculated from the raw materials used to disposal of the product or Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
